Alien Covenant PosterWhen Alien first hit cinema screens in 1979, not only did it redefine the genres of science fiction and horror, and the hybrid genre those two could be, but it arguably became Ridley Scott’s magnus opus. For all the films he’s created or helped create in his lifetime, he’s always seemed to harbour a yearning to return to this universe he’d created. The Alien films have been through many guises, and largely not for the best; the studio interference which plagued Alien 3, into the ill fated crossover films like Alien vs Predator, it seemed the franchise had died a death, similar to that sadly suffered by the Terminator films. But having handed over the reins to other directors, Scott returned with his 2012 prequel Prometheus; whilst critically mixed in its reception, the look, scope and style of it felt like a bold return to what had made the originals so good. Following on from where Prometheus left off is Alien: Covenant. But can it take up Prometheus’ groundwork and make a feature which returns the critical good feeling back to the ailing franchise?

To begin my new weekly series focusing on the feature films of different directors, I will be focusing on the nine feature films of David Fincher’s directorial career. Starting, rather obviously, back in 1992, with his first feature film, the third in the popular Alien series, titled, Alien Cubed, sorry that should be Alien 3, the release title just added the cubed symbol for no obvious reason other than possibly aesthetic effect.
